We spent most of the summer in the Chesapeake Bay, exploring a few of the many lovely bay side towns as well as a few of the large urban regions. My favorite area was the Eastern Shore, also known as the Delmarva Peninsula. The slow paced life and open area felt restful and easy. For reasons which I can not explain, I did not take many pictures. However, the pictures and memories in my mind include old family summer cottages with beautiful long lawns leading to weathered piers, nesting osprey on every piling, navigational mark and duck blind, the taste of Maryland blue crab and oysters. Reading James Michener’s ‘The Chesapeake’ added a richness to the entire experience.
September was spent in the southern New England states, visiting some of the most enchanting places; Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Block Island, Newport, Mystic, Boston and New York.
